Why are There Gaps Between My Teeth?

For one reason or another, teeth often end up becoming misaligned. This can lead to any number of issues, with unusually large gaps being one of the more common problems. Why do these spaces form in the first place? They might part of the long-term consequences of poor oral habits early in life, such as thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting, or using a pacifier. They could also have formed if the teeth shifted for any reason. And in a few cases, the gaps may simply be a result of having an unusually large frenulum or teeth that are smaller than normal.

Who is a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Whether or not Invisalign is a good option for you depends in part on how big the gaps are. Smaller spaces can be corrected with cosmetic bonding or porcelain veneers; Invisalign is normally recommended for larger gaps.

As with any orthodontic treatment, we need to confirm that you’re in good oral health before we can move forward with Invisalign. The procedure is normally offered to patients looking for a solution that’s faster and less noticeable than braces. Remember, Invisalign only works if you’re committed to following the treatment plan; thus, it’s important for you to be able to leave your aligners alone for most of the day.

How Does Invisalign Work?

A digital impression of your mouth is made so that we can create a series of aligners made out of a clear plastic. Each pair of aligners is worn for about 22 hours every day; you will only take them out for meals and oral hygiene purposes. Every one or two weeks, you’ll move on to the next set of aligners. The longer the process continues, the closer your teeth move together. You should complete the series after about 12 months, though of course that time can vary. Like with braces, you’ll need to wear a retainer after the main treatment is complete.
