What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition where a person briefly but frequently stops breathing throughout the night. This can occur for several reasons, but the most common stems from the tongue falling into the back of the throat and the tissues of the upper airway collapsing together. This is called obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA.

When this happens, the body has to partially wake up to get back to normal breathing, leading to fitful sleep that doesn’t allow someone to ever get the rest they need.

How We Treat Sleep Apnea

The most popular sleep apnea treatment is CPAP therapy, wherein a patient literally goes to bed while being attached to an air pump that keeps the throat open using a steady stream of oxygen.

If that doesn’t sound restful to you, you’re not alone. Many prescribed to use a CPAP don’t because the machine can be very uncomfortable, noisy, and cumbersome.

But we can offer an alternative with oral appliance therapy. It’s a small mouthguard worn to bed that slightly moves the lower jaw forward, and that’s all that’s needed to ensure a patient breathes (and sleeps) normally throughout the night.
